Today we celebrate the one year anniversary of Welcome To Now! Founded on March 25th, 2009, WTN has been there over the past year along with all you freaks out there, sharing in the groove and digging the wonderful music taking place all across this great land. In honor of this special day, let’s look back at the 10 biggest musical moments of the past year in Jam:

1. PHISH RETURNS

Phish @ Hamtpon - 3/07/09

Phish returned to the stage in 2009, with a more than triumphant year of playing. The reunion began with a historic 3 show run at Hampton Coliseum in March. Things just got better as the year went on for The Phish – the band released a new album, ‘Joy’, and hit the road for a big 2-leg summer tour, Halloween at Festival 8 in Indio, CA, an East Coast fall tour, and New Years in Miami. All in all, 2009 was a great year to be a Phish-head!

2. PHIL AND BOBBY GO FURTHUR (JOHN K. LEAVES DSO)

Lesh, Weir, and Kadlecik - Dec. 09'

Phil Lesh and Bob Weir shocked deadheads everywhere in August of 09′ when they announced their newest post-Jerry Dead project: Furthur. Unexpected to all, Phil and Bobby called on John Kadlecik, aka ‘Faux Jerry’, aka ‘The Ghost of Jerry’, DSOs long-time axe-man, to join the band. The new project laid to rest indefinitely both Phil Lesh and Friends and Ratdog, and dealt a major blow to DSO, leaving them without a front man. In the 6 months the band has been together, they’ve played a big coming out 3-show run in Oakland, a brief Northeast December tour, New Year’s run in San Fran, and a smoking Winter tour of the East Coast and Midwest. Coming up in 2010, the band will hit the stage for a Memorial Day Festival and a mini-tour of the Northeast in late June and early July.

3. THE DEAD REUNITE FOR TOUR

Months before Furthur, the Core Four reunited for the first time in over 5 years for a one-off Spring Tour across the US. The boys were joined by Warren Haynes on lead guitar and vocals, and Jeff Chimenti of Ratdog on the keys. Check out a few tour highlights below for download!

4. BISCO TAKES FANS HIGHER WITH BIG NOKIA NYE RUN

Bisco - Fall Tour 2009

The Disco Biscuits closed out a fantastic year of playing with their second Annual 5 show run at the Nokia Theater in New York City. By all accounts and from personal experience, this string of shows was top-notch and a real exclamation point on the year for the band. 5. PHISH FESTIVAL 8 & ROLLING STONES MUSICAL COSTUME

Phish - 10/31/09 Set 1

Phish re-launched two traditions on Halloween weekend 2009 with their first festival of Phish 3.0 along with a highly anticipated Halloween musical costume set – The Rolling Stones’ ‘Exile on Main Street’. Breaking new ground, the band also performed an intimate and picturesque acoustic set at Noon on Sunday, with complimentary donuts and coffee for phans. Truly a magical weekend, and it’s now going to be seen like never before in a full length 3D film being released April 30th. Check out this crisp video/audio stream of the Sunday acoustic set here!

6. ABB BACK WITH A VENGEANCE: BEACON, MOUNTAIN JAM, AND MORE

After canceling their annual Beacon run in 2008 due to Greg Allman’s battle with Hepatitis C, the band returned in 2009 with a guest-filled 40th anniversary run at the Beacon Theater. The run included guest stops from a star-studded cast including Clapton, Lesh, Weir, Helm, Scaggs, Anastasio, and McConnell. The band kept trucking in 09′ with spring and summer festival appearances including Wanee and Mountain Jam as well as big summer and fall tours. The band just wrapped up a fantastic 9 show run at the United Palace in New York city, is sounding better than ever, and has more shows plotted for 2010 already. 7. PHIL LESH CELEBRATES 70TH BIRTHDAY WITH SPECIAL PHRIENDS

On March 12th 2010, Phil Lesh celebrated his 70th birthday (technically 3/14/10) with a big bash at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, CA. The evening featured a fun 3 set format complete with an opening acoustic set and 2 raucous electric sets featuring special guests from throughout Phil’s solo career including John Molo, Chris Robinson, Jackie Greene, and Steve Molitz. 8. PHISH DOES BONNAROO, JAMS WITH BRUCE

Breaking with long-standing tradition, Phish played their first mainstream festival with 2 separate appearances (an extended late night set and a 2 set show) at 2009′s Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, TN. The band realized a long time dream and provided the festival’s highlight with a big collaboration with Bruce Springstreen, who also headlined the festival in 09′. The boss and the boys treated fans to a fun cover/bust-out of ‘Mustang Sally’, as well as performances of Bruce’s own songs ‘Glory Days’, and ‘Bobby Jean’. 9. STRING CHEESE REUNITE FOR BIG ROTHBURY GIG

The String Cheese Incident reunited for a special one-off show at 2009′s Rothbury music festival. The band put on a massive spectacle of a show enhanced with massive light and art installations. The show went off with flying colors, so much so that the band has decided to tour further in 2010, with gigs at Red Rocks and beyond already announced and more in the works. 10. TREY BRINGS BACK CLASSIC TAB

Markelis, Lawton, Anastasio, and Paczkowski

Having brought back the core four of his Classic Tab Band – Russ Lawton, Tony Markelis, Ray Paczkowski, and, of course, Big Red himself – in the Fall of 2008, Anastasio hit the road with a bigger-and-better Classic TAB band a few months ago in the Winter of 2010. For the tour, Trey added to the core four with a 3-piece horn section featuring TAB vets Jeffier Hartswick and Russell Reminton along with new-comer cutie Natalie Cressman. The tour was a massive success and featured some of the most enthused and passionate guitar work from Trey since Phish’s 2009 return. Allman Brothers Light Up The United Palace

The Allman Brothers closed out their 2010 NYC residency at the United Palace last Saturday night, with their ninth and final show in less than 2 weeks at the venue. The show smoked from start to finish, with Warren and Derek dueling back and forth all night, constantly upping the ante. Warren was on fire, as always, providing his more rock-heavy, trademark incendiary playing while Derek’s slide work soared above it all, transcending and taking the band to a higher level.

Setlist wise, the show featured lots of ABB classics like ‘Whipping Post’, ‘Elizabeth Reed’, and ‘Jessica’, mixed up with deep Blues cuts like Freddie King’s ‘Woman Across The River’, Muddy Water’s ‘The Same Thing’ (featuring extended jazz/blues jam), and Blind Willie McTell’s ‘Statesboro Blues’. Allman also played tribute to McTell in the first set by singing Dylan’s deep and haunting song titled after the blues great - ‘Blind Willie McTell’. The big finale was a 30 minute + sequence of ‘Dreams’, segued into a huge ‘In Memory of Elizabeth Reed’ that featured a cast of guests, drum, bass, scat solos and climactic jamming. All in all, a wonderful to cap to the Allman’s annual run, enjoy setlists and videos below!

Ahhh, Friday afternoon – a time to relax, turn off, and let your mind surf the interwebs for endless entertainment or lack thereof. If you’re too lazy to see what’s out there, let me help you. Here’s a few noteworthy stories and goings on from the world of Jam today:

1. Warren Haynes: “I am a Jamband whore; and I couldn’t be happier.”

Warren

Well, he didn’t exactly use those words, but Warren said about as much in a Billboard article out today. The man is having his busiest year to date with big tours going on with The Dead (Spring Tour 2009), The Allman Brothers (Beacon Run and Summer/Fall tour w/ WSP), and his own Gov’t Mule project (touring on and off throughout the year). Warren also talks about the new Gov’t Mule album out soon and the solo disc he recorded this year with George Porter, Jr., Ivan Neville, Ian McLagan, Ron Holloway. Always a rumor monger, let me also point out that Warren says that “he’s confident the Dead is going to do some more”, especially with the group’s 45th anniversary in 2010. You may be a whore Warren, but we love you.

2. Animal Collective sample the Dead’s ‘Unbroken Chain’ in new track

News broke today via a Tweet that self-proclaimed Deadheads Animal Collective have been granted the rights to legally sample the Grateful Dead’s classic PhilZone Epic ‘Unbroken Chain’ in a new track the band is working on. You can listen to an unreleased version of the song here (Phil vocal loop comes in near the end).

3. Mike Gordon announces September tour; gets bad haircut

Mike announced today via a creepy video that he’ll be taking to the road in September with his solo band featuring shred-tastic Scott Murawski on guitar, Brooklyn drummer Todd Isler, keyboardist Tom Cleary, and percussionist Craig Myers. Let’s just hope he leaves that Joker costume from the video (see right) at home – that thing is down right scary.

4. Phish continue Halloween festival map mystery

Phish blacked-out more states on their Halloween festival map today (see right). Only 13 states now remain including Texas, Florida, and Nevada. That said, all the real phans know that the festival is still doing down in Indio, CA. Expect the announcment to drop before the band’s upcoming Red Rocks dates and Summer Tour Leg 2, likely this Monday coming up.

The Dead have teamed up with the Allman Brothers Band and the Doobie Brothers for the last stop of their spring tour at the beautiful Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, WA today. The Doobie Brothers kicked things off around 330 PM EST, to be followed by the Allman Brothers and the Dead, of course.

In June of 73′, the Dead and the Allman Brothers teamed up at RFK Stadium in the nation’s capital for what is widely regarded as one of the top Dead shows ever. The Dead delivered a monster 3 set show, with the third set featuring Merl Saunders, Dickey Betts and Butch Trucks. This show is truly a blast from the past, a looking glass into a past time when the Dead, the Brothers, and 30,000 fans could get together on a Sunday and enjoy a sunshine daydream freakout like it was still 1968.

The Dead at RFK

Back up a few years to 1970 – The Filmore East – where we find The Dead and the New Riders of the Purple Sage playing two shows (early and late show) with an intimate Dead Acoustic Set -> New Riders set -> Dead electric set format for both shows. This is A LOT of music. This is early, stripped-down, raw Dead, not to be messed with. Exhibit A: Phil’s bombing entrance into The Other followed by a break-neck rendition. Exhibit B: Bobby’s growls and yells in Minglewood – this is good shit:

Summertime And The Living Is Easy

Some recent additions to what is shaping up to be one of the most jam-packed summer concert seasons ever:

The Gathering Of The Vibes festival, held July 23-26 in Bridgeport, CT, added Crosby, Stills, and Nash to the already stellar line-up as the closing act on Sunday. If you haven’t been, this festival is deadhead heaven and, in this blogger’s opinon, the highlight of the Northeast festival season.

The Allman Brothers Band and Widespread panic announced a co-headlining tour for August and October of 2009. Thic tour promises to deliver a slew of guest appearances and cross-pollination between the bands. I can only imagine adding Jimmy Herring to the ABB arsenal to form a Haynes-Trucks-Herring trifecta.

The Disco Biscuits announced the first round of artists that will appear at this summer’s Camp Bisco 8, held July 16-18 in Mariaville, NY, including Nas and Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley, STS9, Shpongle, Younger Brother, EOTO, OL, and many many more. The electronica-heavy festival continues to diversify its offering and keep things interesting.
