To keep it together in this topsy turvy world, sometimes you just gotta mix it up and get crazy. In that vein, let’s take a 180 degree turn from Levon Helm’s take on The Dead that we saw here on Welcome To Now a couple days ago. These Dead covers come courtesy of a Jay-Z and friends mash-up put together by SpinJunkies – I guarantee you’ve never heard Dead like this before. Strap in and get ready for a good time, this is Jay-Z’s Dead…
After a few requests, I took the time to put together an mp3 download of the Dead show from Rothbury last weekend. You can download the show in mp3 format here. Enjoy! For you Torrent heads, you can still pick up the Torrent here.

Check out this great, crispy sounding AUD recording of Mule’s recent appearance at the Puisto Blues Festival in Finland. This show rocks, lots of Mule anthems (Thorazine Shuffle, Mule, Banks of the Deep End, Blind Man In The Dark) along with a nice helping of Blues classics (32/30 Blues, Look On Yonder Wall, Come On Into My Kitchen, and Zepelin’s Since I’ve Been Loving You). Warren’s on point but, then again, when is the man not? He’s may be a jamband whore, but he’s a true work horse – the hardest working man in the scene. Gotta love Warren, gotta love the Mule. Speaking of Mule, don’t miss their new album, ‘By a Thread’, and upcoming cross country 2009 tour!

This weekend, IClips is doing a free webcast of the Rothbury festival, taking place in Rothbury, MI from July 2nd-5th, 2009. Check out the webcast schedule and stream here. Rothbury’s lineup this year just dwarfs any other summer fest going down in 09′. Huge performances include a one night return of the String Cheese Incident from their recent breakup. The fest will also showcase the only summer appearance (and last performance for some time) from The Dead, and headlining slots from rock greats Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. Other notable acts include G. Love and Special Sauce, The Disco Biscuits, Gov’t Mule, Keller Williams, Les Claypool, STS9, The Toots and the Maytals, and Umphrey’s McGee.
Let’s go way back in time for the earliest Dead recording yet to be seen here on Welcome To Now – The Grateful Dead in their infancy at the Filmore in San Fran in the summer of 66′. This is pure, early Dead, still filled with the influences of Bluegrass, Jug Music, and Americana. These influences would later be blended into the ether with Rock and Roll, Psychedelia, Classic Rock, and 80’s short shorts. This summer set consists of mostly early covers and traditional numbers only featuring one Dead original, ‘Cream Puff War’. While part of Boss Man and Dancin’ are cut, this is a pristine recording – both the download and the stream. Groovy.

Keller Williams is joining in the wave of innovation surrounding CD releases with his new ‘Once A Week Freak’ offering. Keller will be unveiling a few new songs each week over the course of the coming months. He claims that he is sitting on mountains of unreleased material and that the exact songs released will be based on fan feedback. Quite a novel concept, check out the Freak’s latest work here.
The one man band will then be heading out on an extensive solo summer tour – traversing the country from East to West with a few co-bills with Dark Star Orchestra and festival stops at Rothbury, Gratefulfest, and the Gathering of the Vibes. To get excited for the upcoming tour – check out this tasty Keller show from Irving Plaza in NYC in 2003:

It’s Friday so let’s get down and dirty with some Bisco. In case you weren’t paying attention, the TranceFusion all-stars threw a serious summer kick-off party at Red Rocks on May 30th – the so-called Bisco Inferno mini-festival. The biscuits headlined with a 2 set show featuring new and old favorites side by side. The show is definitely down and dirty Bisco, straight Untz throughout with some great 2nd set jam sequences and segues.

It’s that time again to dust off the ol’ Grateful Dead history books. Class, please turn your books to 19 years ago for a mid-summer’s meltdown at the University of Oregon in 1990. Only 1 month before Brent Mydland’s death, this was one of the keyboardist’s final shows with the band and his playing still comes through crisp and clear. Jerry’s voice may be a bit strained during the show but his playing is on point and this show really has some great moments – it’ll crawl up and down your sleeve and leave a smile on your face when it’s over, enjoy!
