Phil and Friends Nokia 2007 Revisited

In November of 2007, Phil and Friends embarked on a 10-show run at the Nokia Theater in Times Square, New York City. The run, dubbed “The Other New York City Marathon”, was a real coming together moment for the final Phil lineup (Lesh, Greene, Campbell, Molo, Molitz). The band really started to click, new songs were introduced, and the jams and segues got out of control over the course of the run. The shows were so successful that they added a 10th night, Sunday, November 11th, after all the other shows had sold out. The show was a monster of course, with a massive and triumphant setlist. Furthur at Radio City Music Hall

In case you missed it, Furthur took New York City by storm this week, with two big mid-week shows at Radio City Music Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The boys kicked off night 1 with a fun and exciting 15 minute excursion that included a build up jam that led into the Other One drop and Other One jam (no vocals) followed by a surprise segue into a Playin’ In the Band. This opening bang set the tone for the run which featured fun, energetic, and focused playing coupled with eclectic and upbeat song choice. Check out setlists, pics, and downloads below.

Wednesday Night’s show carried a 60s and 70s vibe, with a strong first set featuring Truckin’, Dire Wolf, Mama Tried, Til The Morning Comes, and Brown Eyed Women (all songs written/performed first by 1972 at the latest). The second set looked forwards in time with a solid suite of classic mid-70s set 2 material including a Scarlet -> Fire, and a grand finale run through St. Stephen into the 60’s throwback Born Cross Eyed, into Eyes and then a big Morning Dew. Seems to me that both Bobby and Phil always bring the ‘Dew’ to NYC, and it’s much appreciated in this Deadhead’s book – always a real treat to hear.

Night 1 carried much more of an 80s vibe, mixed in with some interesting cover song selection. The band covered seven songs throughout the night: Clapton’s ‘After Midnight’, Dylan’s ‘Masterpeice’, Traffic’s ‘Dear Mr. Fantasy’, Otis Redding’s ‘Hard To Handle’, Chuck Berry’s ‘Johnny B. Goode’, George Jones’ ‘The Race Is On’, and finally the Ratdog original – Two Djinn. A few too many covers for me but you have to appreciate Furthur’s effort to shake things up with the setlists, especially considering the often repetitive and stagnant shows from ‘The Dead’ in 09′.

Mule’s House of Blues

Gov’t Mule always rocks the House of Blues – be it in New Jersey, Florida, Illinois or even Dallas, Texas where the band found themselves last Thursday evening. The House of Blues bears a certain weight, a certain tradition of bluesmen past that modern blues greats like Warren Haynes can channels and revel in.

What better place for Gov’t Mule to flex their blues muscle and show off their new and improved rhythm section featuring Jorgen Carlsson on bass. The new Mule lineup has really gelled over the course of 2009 into 2010 and the band is back to playing with that utmost confidence and precision, the way only Mule can. TAB in Chicago – 2/19/10

Trey brought his Classic TAB band to Chicago last night for a long and jam-packed show at The Riviera Theater. The first set concluded with a 4 show Trey solo acoustic segment as he has been doing over the past week of the tour. This time, Trey dusted off Phish staples Brian and Robert, Driver, Sample In A Jar, and Wilson for the acoustic treatment. The second set was straightforward heavy-duty Trey Band ragin’ fun with jam-favorites Dragonfly, Night Speaks, Sand, Mr. Completely, and Last Tube making appearances along with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Black Dog’ to end the set. Nateva Announces Headliners

The Nateva Music and Camping Festival has announced its headliners for their inaugural 2010 event: Furthur will headline Sunday July 4th, The Flaming Lips will play on Saturday the 3rd, moe. on the 2nd, and Lotus will headline the Thursday July 1st pre-party. Additional acts announced today include Keller Williams, Zappa Plays Zappa, and Moonalice.

Disco Biscuits Tour Preview

Tomorrow, Bisco embarks on a long, 2-part Winter/Spring 2010 tour. Things kick off with a 4 show Northeast run this weekend hitting some of the band’s favorite rooms including Ram’s Head, Lupo’s, and The Calvin. This run promises to be hot hot hot as Bisco always brings the heat for their home turf fans.

The band then takes a few weeks off before embarking on a more substantial east coast spring tour that runs from March 17th to April 25th and covers ground from New York to South Carolina and back again. The  tour starts the day after the highly-anticipated Planet Anthem release date of March 16th and promises to offer a lot of new material and exploration. Full tour dates and ticket info below.

Finally, while the Nateva Festival continues to delay their initial artist announcement (they have announced only The Flaming Lips and Derek Trucks/Susan Tedeschi Band thus far), they have confirmed that they will make the announcement this Friday, Feb. 19th. Additionally, the festival sent out a facebook message to its fans saying that they would be handing out flyers announcing their headliners AT the Furthur show this Thursday in Manchester, NH. It seems clear that Furthur will be among the announcements, as has been rumored here and elsewhere on the web. Other rumored acts include The Allman Brothers Band, Trey Anastasio Band, and Umphrey’s Mcgee.

The inaugural Nateva Festival will take place July 2nd-4th, 2010 in Oxford, ME. Tickets are on-sale now for an early-bird price of $199 (3 day camping pass).

For Valentine’s day this year, let’s all enjoy a menage a trois of jammy goodness. Trey and Classic TAB lit up the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, while Furthur channeled the ghosts of 5/8/77 in a special Barton Hall performance, and at the same time way out in Colorado – Gov’t Mule raged on a mountain in Aspen. Furthur at the Mothership

The Hampton Coliseum, The Mothership – a classic arena in Dead lore and Phish lore alike.  The venue is famous for its spaceship-like appearance, intimate size, impeccable sight lines, and of course the legendary shows that have graced its stage.

Last night was surely a real treat for Furthur, playing their largest venue of the tour, albeit not sold out by any means. The band went for an 80s pychedelia feel for the show, dusting off gems like Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again, Picasso Moon, and Dear Mr. Fantasy, accompanied by a nice mix of 60s tripper material including Viola Lee Blues, Dark Star, and Masons Children.
