Conspirator – The Independent – 3/24/12

This past Saturday night, San Francisco’s trendy, intimate club ‘The Independent’ hosted a serious electronic gathering including Conspirator, Orchard Lounge, Wyllys, and NVO. Suprisingly, the club wasn’t packed to the gills and the crowd was in good spirits for a serious EDM dance party with lots of bay area freaks in attendance. Unfortunately, WTN didn’t make it in for NVO or Wyllys, but we caught both OL and Conspirator and can report that both threw down hard for the SF fans. Orchard Lounge laid down a spirited high-energy set that saw the three-DJ team tag off and on and even tag team on a few tracks, rarely stopping the music. For the most part, they kept the beats upbeat and accesible, with mid to fast tempo bass-heavy house and funk grooves. After a very, very solid set that warmed everybody up, OL introduced Conspirator round’ midnight. Brownie, Magner, Michetti, and drummer-for-the night KJ Sawka took the stage, Brownie spoke about his love for SF, and they launched into an all out, nearly 2-hour long assualt of banging beats, slick guitar riffage, and some solid jams and comical banter from a clearly ‘loose’ Brownie.

The focus this night was on rock and guitar heavy ‘bangers’ (including a take on Tom Saywer), with a little less Biscuits-style jamming then I’ve seen in the past. This seemed to mesh well with OL’s set and kept the energy high throughout their time on stage. The performance was energized by the dynamic and impressive drumming of KJ Sawka – he really got down and dirty and wasn’t afraid to show off. The band as a whole definitely seemed to be locked in and excited about the music they’re writing and performing these days, and Michetti looks to be getting a lot more comfortable letting go and shredding. The MVP of the performance, however, had to be Aron Magner, who really seemed to be running the show and directing the band at many points throughout the night.

Orchard Lounge and The Indobox – 4/11/09 @ Sullivan Hall

Last night’s late night party at Sullivan Hall saw the Indobox and Orchard Lounge each lay img_326751_primary1down extended
sets to a happy, dancey, and no doubt twisted crowd at the Greenwich Village jam hot-spot – Sullivan Hall.

Indobox played an intense and energetic 2 hour set with face-melting jams from the quartet flowing until 2:30. While it’s hard to deny this band is a Bisco rip-off, they do it well and definitely have their own unique style to add to the mix as well. This was my first Indobox show and I’d have to say I’d definitely catch these guys again:

The headlining act – Orchard Lounge – emerged after a short break around 300 Am and delivered a jaw-dropping dance fest of music (complete with live on-stage painting) that raged past 4 in the morning. While I don’t have the setlist, the whole idea of a ‘song’ isn’t really that relevant when you’re talking about the interwoven electro-jam segments the band dabbles in. Let me just say the crowd was loving every minute, spirits were high, smiles all around, and feet were moving. What a great way to close out an amazing weekend of music here in the greatest city in the world!

Friday Night – 4/10/09

Umphrey’s McGee @ Nokia Theater Times Square – If you’ve been living in a hole for the past 5 years and still find Umphrey’s prog-Metal-Jam style fresh and interesting, then you’re in for a treat. They are likely to throw down 2 longs sets with classic cuts and fresh material off the recently released Mantis. Over/under on guitar duels between Jake and Brendan  –  seven.

Lotus @ Bowery Ballroom – If I had to choose, this is the show to be at Friday night. Lotus delivers a jazzy yet poppy, electronica-laced sound that is fun and danceable. They avoid the at times over-untz’d Bisco sound and keep things 10x times more interesting than Sleep Tribe Sector 9, finding a happy medium somewhere in between. Go, dance, stalk.

Strange Design w/ the McLovins @ Sullivan Hall – This is the cheese-factor show of the night featuring two fun bands even if their existence probably stands to be questioned. For those of you not famililar w/ the McLovins – they are a group of 12 year olds, discovered on Phish Phantasy Tour, forced to change their name to ‘McLovins’ because PT heads couldn’t get over the uncanny similarities between the guitar player and ‘McLovin’ form SuperBad. Anyway, nuff’ said, just check out the YouTube vid above and you’ll see why they are opening for Strange Design.

Strange Design is a Phish cover band that, while technically strong, seems to be made for nerds who never saw a pre-hiatus show and have sat in front of their computers listening to botched versions of YEM since coventry. With Phish back, one questions why they don’t pack it in and go on Phish tour if they love the music so much.

U-Melt late night (post-UM show) @ B.B. King Blues Club – If you don’t enjoy a good melt from time to time, this show is likely not for you. U-Melt honed their sound in the parking lot of Phish shows and has come a long way to be headlining B.B King’s on a Friday night in New York City. They promise to keep the party going until early in the morning.

Orchard Lounge with the Indobox @ Sullivan hall late night (post-UM show) – Orchard Lounge is an innovative trip-hop electronica trio of DJs out of Chicago and Indobox is an up and coming east coast Jam Warrior favorite. This show promises to be the best late night party in the city. Be there or be, well, asleep earlier than 5.
