Phish @ Alpine 6/21 Tour Closer

The end of the road – last night, Phish took a bow on the first leg of their summer tour and their first tour in 5 years. This tour exceeded many a phan’s expectations including my own and left us all salivating for more. Let’s hope that Phish 3.0 can stay happy and healthy and keep things rollin’ down the road for more magic in 2009 into 2010 and beyond.

Phish – The Creek and The Valley Tour Close Out

Tonight, Phish closes out the first leg of their summer tour with a Sunday night performance at the classic summer getaway Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI. The last two night’s have witnessed some pretty stellar song selection and fantastic playing. The second set jam sequences from Deer Creek are phenomenal – AHIHTOS > Drowned > Twist followed by a monster Tweezer > 2001 > Suzy Greenberg > Possum taboot. First time bustouts for the tour include The Connection and Sleeping Monkey at Deer Creek followed by Makisupa Policeman and Hendrix’s Fire at Alpine night 1. The band’s clearly pulling out all the stops for the end of the tour and it’s exciting to think of what is in store for this evening. Gamehenge classics Tela and Cololnel Forbin’s > Famous Mockingbird are yet to be brushed off by Phish 3.0. Anything’s possible, but my bets are on Hood, First Tube, Slave to the Traffic Light, Divided Sky, and The Curtain for tonight.

Phish @ The Fox

Following their biggest show of the summer to the 80,000+ festivarians at Bonnaroo last weekend, Phish played the smallest venue of their summer tour last night – the intimate 4,500 person capacity Fox Theatre in St. Louis. The most hyped show of the summer and probably the hardest ticket, the Fox performance seemingly fell short of expectations (at least on paper). Despite the ‘McGrupp’ bustout in the encore and a 2nd set Mike’s Groove, the new song, ballad, and repeat heavy setlist has fans hailing this as the ‘sleeper’ show of the summer. Let’s just hope the boys are saving up for the tour-closing 4 show run comign up this wekend.

Jerry and Branford in 94'

1991, Madison Square Garden, the Dead and jazz legend Branford Marsalis get together for a beautiful night of music. Turn to the ‘Help on the Way’, the interplay between Phil’s crisp bass sound and Branford’s deep, in-the-pocket grooves is testament to what this combo can bring. The 13 minute ‘Shakedown’ opener is also a great indication of what this gem has in store. Give it a listen – I reccomdend the SBD stream to get a nice mix of all the parts – but the AUD really captures the energy of the Garden. Hell, listen to em’both,  you won’t be dissapointed!

Phish – 6/09/09 – Asheville, NC

Tonight, Phish is back at in down in Asheville at the intimate 7,500 person capacity Asheville Civic Center. Notable first time bust outs for the tour include Gumbo, Halley’s, and Bold as Love (Hendrix) and the show also saw the debut of two more new additions to the Phish canon – Alaska (originally performed by TAB Band) and When the Cactus Is In Bloom (Bill Monroe cover). Overall an eclectic setlist but one that seemingly lacks flow on paper, not to mention the band has a tough feat to live up to the straight fire show they layed down in Camden. Either way, let’s hope the band keeps building steam as they continue on down the road to big Bonnaroo appearance in Tennessee.

Phish @ Jones Breach Night 3 – 6/05/09

Phish layed it on heavy last night for their final night at Jones Beach. A mostly jam-less but well played first set was capped off with a Split Open And Melt that really lived up to its name. The second set was pure magic with the exception of the new song ‘Twenty Years Later’ that read like page 3 of Trey’s diary from the day after his arrest – something best kept to himself in this phaner’s view. An unexpected highlight of the night was the ‘Backwards Down the Number Line’ which had the whole crowd dancing and singing to this Phish 3.0 insta-classic. Other highlights are the My Friend, My Friend, and second set ragers Free, 2001, an Twist con ‘oye como va’ teases taboot. Fuck yea’ Phish!

Dark Star Orchestra – Philadelphia, PA – 5/30/09

Last Saturday at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, Grateful Dead Jedi-Knights Dark Star Orchestra went to intergalactic war with a classic early 80’s Dead show – 10/15/83 from the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, CT and what a treat it was.

DSO

DSO

Rarely heard gems like ‘Wang Dang Doodle’ and ‘Keep Your Day Job’ were intermingled with classic rockers ‘I Know You Rider’,  ‘Throwing Stones’, and a ‘One More Saturday Night’ that almost tore that ol’ building down. Other highlights included a lightning speed ‘Let It Grow’, a Phil-Bombtastic ‘Minglewood Blues’, and a ‘Playing In The Band’ that went to the depths and beyond. As if that wasn’t enough, the band finished off the show at 1:00 AM and then capped things off with a with a complimentary ‘filler’ of ‘Midnight Hour’, ‘Easy Wind’, and the famous Blues For Allah Medley ‘Help/Slip!/Franklin’s Tower’. Check out the setlist and original Grateful Dead bootleg from the show below.
