Furthur Night 3, 9/20/09

Well, as soon as they came, they’re gone. What a weekend blowout it was though with Furthur at the Fox, they really proved that the Dead’s music is alive and well, still able to take on new forms and flavors. All we can do now is hope for some more dates to be announced. John K. posted via the DSOForums website that ‘more dates are in the works, but likely nothing on the east coast until at least 2010’. It’s also yet to be seen if Dark Star Orchestra or Furthur will be playing NYE this year. So far, DSO has announced shows for Dec 28th and 29th only, both in Virginia. Look for New Year’s announcments in the coming weeks. Until next time –  furthur on up the road.

Spread It Round

In the interest of free love and music, check out these two phan-made compilations that you’re sure to love. First, we have ‘Phish Destorys America’,  a compilation chronicling the highest of high points from the band’s 1997 fall tour – widely regarded as one of the band’s best. Fall 1997 found the band moving out of their mid-nineties creative peek into their most exploratory late nineties ‘cow funk’ period, all the while building towards their massive career-crescendo millennium show. The disc is aptly name, the band is just killing it and overflowing with funky-throw-down-dance-party energy in these takes, check it out.

Second, we have a fantastic compilation of the Grateful Dead’s ‘Best 31 Jam Segments’ of all time. This wealth of  fun is put together by a group of deadheads who call themselves the GratefulDeadProjects, check out all their other great work here. There’s too much good stuff to even get into in these compilations. This is just classic, top-notch, pure Dead, as good as it gets.

40 Years Ago Today

As if 20 years ago wasn’t far enough – let’s take the time machine even furthur back in time to 40 years ago today. On this day in the great year of 1969, we find ourselves freaking out with the good ole Grateful Dead in beautiful San Fransisco. This sweet sounding SBD recording finds the band at a crucial point in their career – finding their feet exploring various styles such as Jug, Blues, Americana, and of course Psychedelic. Check out this show, get your freak on, and enjoy this beautiful afternoon with the Dead.

20 Years Ago Today (Yesterday)

Check out this killer show from the Greek in 89′ – famous for one of the best versions of ‘The Other One’ and a smoking China > Rider. It’s all gravy after those cuts but the rest of the show holds up with inspired playing a nice varied setlist drawing on old tunes, newer ones, and choice covers. Enjoy!

Today in Grateful Dead History

Later released as Dick’s Pick 32, this gem of a show comes from Alpine Valley in 1982. Although the show was officialy released, the Audience recording bootleg is still heavily circulated. It was pretty cool to see the band transition from Music Never Stopped>Sugaree>Music. ‘Big River’ is always a treat and it made me boogie in my chair. ‘CC Rider’ was hot with funky and folksy Bobby vocal stylings and playing. I really appreciate ‘Let it Grow’ as a set 1 closer as it leaves the crowd energized and hungry for more.

GDDP32

China/Rider picked up right where ‘Let it Grow’ left off to start off set 2; ‘Woman R Smarter’ brought the house down and was paired up nicely with a ‘Ship of Fools’ that cooled the crew down. The band then launches into outer space with a Playin’>Drums>Space>Wheel>Playin’ (Reprise) sequence – the journey was interesting, to say the least. Finally, Jerry brings things back down to earth with a tasteful yet moving ‘Morning Dew’. Going out on a high note, ‘Saturday Night’ raged to close out set 2 and ‘U.S. Blues’ topped everything off nicely.

Friday Music News Round-Up

Ahhh, Friday afternoon – a time to relax, turn off, and let your mind surf the interwebs for endless entertainment or lack thereof. If you’re too lazy to see what’s out there, let me help you. Here’s a few noteworthy stories and goings on from the world of Jam today:

1. Warren Haynes: “I am a Jamband whore; and I couldn’t be happier.”

Warren

Warren

Well, he didn’t exactly use those words, but Warren said about as much in a Billboard article out today. The man is having his busiest year to date with big tours going on with The Dead (Spring Tour 2009), The Allman Brothers (Beacon Run and Summer/Fall tour w/ WSP), and his own Gov’t Mule project (touring on and off throughout the year). Warren also talks about the new Gov’t Mule album out soon and the solo disc he recorded this year with George Porter, Jr., Ivan Neville, Ian McLagan, Ron Holloway. Always a rumor monger, let me also point out that Warren says that “he’s confident the Dead is going to do some more”, especially with the group’s 45th anniversary in 2010. You may be a whore Warren, but we love you.

2. Animal Collective sample the Dead’s ‘Unbroken Chain’ in new track

Phil

Phil

News broke today via a Tweet that self-proclaimed Deadheads Animal Collective have been granted the rights to legally sample the Grateful Dead’s classic PhilZone Epic ‘Unbroken Chain’ in a new track the band is working on. You can listen to an unreleased version of the song here (Phil vocal loop comes in near the end).

3. Mike Gordon announces September tour; gets bad haircut

mike

Mike

Mike announced today via a creepy video that he’ll be taking to the road in September with his solo band featuring shred-tastic Scott Murawski on guitar, Brooklyn drummer Todd Isler, keyboardist Tom Cleary, and percussionist Craig Myers. Let’s just hope he leaves that Joker costume from the video (see right) at home – that thing is down right scary.

4. Phish continue Halloween festival map mystery

The Map - 7/17/09

The Map - 7/17/09

Phish blacked-out more states on their Halloween festival map today (see right). Only 13 states now remain including Texas, Florida, and Nevada. That said, all the real phans know that the festival is still doing down in Indio, CA. Expect the announcment to drop before the band’s upcoming Red Rocks dates and Summer Tour Leg 2, likely this Monday coming up.

Today in GD History

Summertime, The Grateful Dead, one of the country’s most anticipated summer outdoor summer music venues- what more could you want. Fresh off the trail of a fantastic Alpine Valley run, this Deer Creek show really cooks. The interplay between Brent and Jerry on the opening Bertha is indicative of the show’s style and the style of the band in the late 80’s. This show really cooks from cover to cover and is a great listen for a mid-summer’s day, as much now as it was 20 years ago to the day.

Midsummer Night's Dead

A Midsummer Night's Dead

Jay-Z’s Dead

To keep it together in this topsy turvy world, sometimes you just gotta mix it up and get crazy. In that vein, let’s take a 180 degree turn from Levon Helm’s take on The Dead that we saw here on Welcome To Now a couple days ago. These Dead covers come courtesy of a Jay-Z and friends mash-up put together by SpinJunkies – I guarantee you’ve never heard Dead like this before. Strap in and get ready for a good time, this is Jay-Z’s Dead…
