With Festival 8 underway, and the mystery musical costume set soon to be revealed, the only remaining question is what the band has planned for New Year’s Eve. All signs still point to either 3 or 4 nights in Miami, likely to be announced a week or so following the festival. Other rumored dates include a few nights back at Hampton and 2 nights in Atlanta before continuing southbound.

NYE 03 Miami

While NYE is still up in the air – 2010’s plan seem more certain with a heavily rumored Trey solo tour in February followed by a Phish Europe tour in May.

Tie Dye Sky

As we speak, the Empire State Building is being lit up in tye dye colors in honor of the Grateful Dead. Specifically, the celebration is for the opening of an exhibit at the New York Historical Society honoring the band and  cataloging the career and accomplishments as of one of America’s most socially influential bands. On Wednesday night, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh will attend a charity fundraiser to celebrate the opening of the exhibit.

On a side note, rumor has it that Phil will be sitting in with Bobby tonight for the first of his 5 Ratdog shows in the city this week. Today is truly a proud day to be a New York Deadhead!

Trey Anastasio Band to Tour in Feb. 2010?

Check out the screenshot below taken from a concert booking site – according to which Trey will be going on the road solo early in 2010 with a few dates in the Midwest and Northeast. I’m sure the boys will be ready for a break after Fall and NYE 09′ and this will be a good chance for Trey and likely Mike to get some space and go solo for a bit.

An Albany bar is advertising a post-Phish show after party with The Heayy Pets on Nov. 27th and Raisinhead on the 28th. 3. Mule tour close-out at the Warfield w/ Special Guests

govt_mule-19

Gov’t Mule pulled out all the stops for the final show of their late summer/early fall tour that took place last weekend at The Warfield Theater in San Francisco. Warren and the boys brought out Jackie Greene, Grace Potter, and Jose Neto and rocked out on all the Mule classics and run throughs of the following set of choice covers: One of These Days (Floyd), Wish You Were Here (Floyd), Loser (GD), Morning Dew (GD), Empty Pages (Traffic), Wild Horses (Stones), Southern Man (Neil Young), and a smoking Mule > Who do you Love (Bo Diddley) > Whole Lotta Love (Zep) sandwich. Wow is just about all you can say to that. Give it a listen and check out some great pics from Jambase below:

Time Turns Acoustic

In a surprise move yesterday, Phish announced a special ‘crack of Noon’ acoustic set to take place at high noon on day 3 of Festival 8. The band also released the official schedule for their Halloween weekend jamboree as part of the announcement. In other Festival 8 news, Trey  gave two radio interviews this week to discuss the upcoming festival and the Phish reunion at large. For the most part, these interviews seems to be marketing tactics for the Festival which has been rumored to be struggling with below-desired ticket sales. As a result, these interviews are mostly fluff (not the good kind), though one interesting tidbit was revealed: the band had chosen a musical costume and learned half of it when Page vetoed the selection sending the band back to the drawing board. Some sources are reporting the shelved selection was none other than the Grateful Dead’s ‘Workingman’s Dead’…

Picture 1

Speaking of the Dead, let’s not forget the critical role the band played in defining many of the now ingrained traditions of the jam world – from LSD soaked audiences to following fanbases to tie-dyes to the rarely played ‘acoustic set’. Let’s look back in time 29 years ago to the day to one of those special evenings where the Dead treated their fans to a special acoustic set (followed of course by a raging electric set for set 2) on their home turf at the Warfield in San Fran. Stream the crispy SBD here or download an audience recording here.

Ratdog in Vegas

You gotta hand it to Bob Weir – the man just won’t quit. Weir and Ratdog just finished a massive summer tour and have more  2009 dates lined up with a week of fall shows in Philly and New York City. Then, in January 2010, the Dog’ is off for their annual winter getaway in Jamaica. While all seems to be as expected in the Bobby camp, lots of rumors have emerged in recent months that this year’s Jamaica excursion could be the official winding down of Ratdog and the band’s last shows. Only time will tell, but I’ll say this – catch em’ while you can. And go Bobby!

In the mean time, check out this show from one the of final shows of the summer tour in Sin City, Las Vegas. Bobby may be goin’ to hell in a bucket, but at least he’s still enjoying the ride…

Getting Phishy

Things are getting Phishy around here…

More news on the upcoming Phish fall/winter tour, this time coming right from the mouth of Mike ‘Cactus’ Gordon himself. Gordo states that Phish is “definitely doing some playing, in the soon future i think”… Whatever the hell that means – he’s reportedly “very excited” about it. All signs point to the originally rumored fall tour dates being announced in the coming weeks, likely the same week as the official Joy album release on September 8th.

Mike's Wook

In the soon future I think?

Some more good Phish reading here – an interview with the band’s sound crew on all the latest gadgets they use these days to power the band and capture them in their element for the LivePhish series. Check out their work over at the LivePhish site where they’re slinging SBDs of every show within a few hours of the last notes.

Finally, speaking of Soundboards – some rare 98 and 99 SBDs recent surfaced mysteriously, check em’ out over at Hidden Track for some good listenting. There’s tons of goodies to go around – a long ‘Colonel Forbin’s Ascent'(w/ narration, a Neil Young Sit-In, some serious 98 funk (see ‘Ghost’ and ‘Cities’), and the rarely performed ‘Bittersweet Motel’.

Biscuits for Thanksgiving Dinner and New Year’s Dessert

More rumors amuck today – this time in the Bisco camp. Word is the band is making a Thanksgiving weekend homecoming to the Electric Factory in Philly for Friday and Saturday performances on November 27th and 28th. Additionally, rumor has it that the band will return to the Nokia Theater in Times Square, New York City for a 5-NIGHT (!) New Years run.

Bisco just won’t let up in 2009 – playing more shows than recent years including an upcoming monster of a fall tour to promote their  long awaited new album – ‘Planet Anthem’ – that will likely in January of next year. Check out the first two tracks off the forthcoming album here.

Phish Fall Tour and NYE 2009

The dates rumored here over two months ago are seeming more and more certain for Phish’s fall and NYE plans. Sources inside the Phish org are confirming the below dates, and also the possibility of an April 2010 European tour. Other uncorrobated rumors include a pre-Festival8 run including The Hollywood Bowl, a Conan appearance, and a stop in Denver at a location TBD. Additionaly, it looks as if the boys may make a mid-week stop in Worcester between their Albany and MSG dates in the fall. While nothing’s confirmed until it’s on the Phish.com, I’d say go ahead – get excited, make travel plans, get ready for winter Phish, the tastiest kind!

Phil’s New Phriends?

The rumor mills are churning today with news that Phil Lesh is getting together a new band consisting of Bob Weir, John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra’s faux-Jerry), Joe Russo, and 2 other mystery members. The band is supposedly doing a short run at the Fox Theater in Oakland, September 18-20th. Bets are on as to the other members – likely Baracco, Segal, or Molitz on keys and a 3rd guitar player? We’ll just have to wait and see on the details, hopefully coming soon.

Phil Lesh: Then

Phil Lesh: Then

There are a lot of mixed feelings out there about Phil enlisting John K. but it’s hard to argue with his jedi-like mastery of the Jerry songbook. It sure will be interesting to see how John and Bob mix in the same band – I, for one, see a steam locomotive trainwreck, rolling down the tracks. Time will tell, and until it does let’s just rejoyce that Phil is making moves and keepin’ the music alive.

And Now
