John Kadlecik Leaves DSO To Go Furthur

It was officially announced today on Dark Star Orchestra’s website as well as John K’s site that the frontman faux-Jerry extraordinaire is resigning from the band and will play his last DSO show December 5th in Buffalo, NY. Kadlecik says that he “cannot in good conscience divide [his] time and energy between DSO and Furthur”, and he feels that it “would be a disservice to all parties involved”. In the interim, Jeff Mattson (Zen Tricksters, Donna Jean Goodchaux Band, Phil Lesh and Friends) will be filling in – at least for the NYE run, Jam Cruise, and the winter tour announced today. The band’s publicist, Dave Weissman, told Hidden Track that “Mattson’s assignment will be temporary, and that DSO has begun a search for a permanent replacement”. Read what drummer Rob Koritz has to say about the decision here.

Today in Grateful Dead History

The early 70s were an interesting time  for the Grateful Dead – a period of massive songwriting, creative, and musical growth and at the same time an era of sadness over the loss of Pigpen and growing weariness due to building troubles of years on the road. The weight of these troubles would eventually lead to the band’s brief hiatus in the mid-seventies.

It never ceases to amaze me that the band onstage continued to build on each night’s performance, with unbridled abandon, regardless of what was going on in their world. This show from 1971 is a great example of this relentlessness. This is one of Keith’s first shows with the band, filling in for the ailing Pigpen. Despite some sound issues early on, this show is pure bliss from start to finish. Give it a go and see for yourself.

Happy Mule-o-Ween!

To sum up Mule-o-Ween, let’s just say that Mule rocked the Tower harder than its been rocked in some time, and probably harder than it will be for a long time to come. Warren Haynes knows how to deliver for the holidays and he was on fire all night long, like a man possessed. The band decided to switch things up this year from the previous Halloweens – this time taking on the Rolling Stones musical cover for the 1st set and bringing it home with straight un-cut Mule for Set 2.

Over the course of the evening, we got an inspired and picture-perfect Stones musical costume, a nice showcase of new songs from the recently released By a Thread, and a truly epic Brighter Days>Blind Man in The Dark and Goin’ Out West>Bang a Gong>Goin’ Out West old school close-out to the show. Many have said that Warren Haynes is the hardest working man in the jam scene, well let me just say he leads by example and I’m consistently amazed with Mule’s ability to bring it, night after night, like a ram that just won’t stop. I highly recommend giving this one a listen, you won’t regret it.

Other rumored dates include a few nights back at Hampton and 2 nights in Atlanta before continuing southbound.

NYE 03 Miami

While NYE is still up in the air – 2010’s plan seem more certain with a heavily rumored Trey solo tour in February followed by a Phish Europe tour in May.
