Gov’t Mule in Chicago – 10/24/09

Mule kicked off their fall Tour last weekend with a pair of shows – one in Indianapolis and one in Chicago. The Chicago show on Saturday night had the band really settling in and hitting the groove, mixing up new material from the recently released By A Thread with old Mule classics and, of course, some tasty covers. Jackie Greene is opening up this tour and has been joining the band for rockin’ encores including covers of  Neil Young’s ‘Southern Man’, The Beatles ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, and the Mule/Greene Dead staple ‘Sugaree’ – and that’s just in the first 2 nights of the tour. The tour will culminate this Saturday in what promises to be an epic Halloween at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA – featuring a set 2 Rolling Stones musical costume set plus what promises to be a fat set of Mule rockers to start things off. Look for a full review, dl, etc. after the show.

Ratdog Tour Closer at the Beacon, 10/24/09

Ratdog blew the roof off the Beacon Theater last night – a real smoking show from cover to cover. Highlights include a first set Cassidy>Jack Straw>Rooster>DS Jam sequence that really took off and shined. The 1st set closing Liberty>Bertha had the place jumping – smiles all around.

Dark Star Jam - 10/24/09

Dark Star Jam - 10/24/09

The second set begins with a nicely chosen trio of tunes with Bobby on acoustic – Mexicali, FOTD, and fan-favorite Black Throated Wind that really hit a nice groove. The heart of the show has to be magnificent Other One>Stuff>Morning Dew>Dark Star Jam>Cassidy (Repirse), so glad the boys saved so much good stuff for night 3 at the Beacon. A raucous One More Saturday Night, and one-two punch Ripple, US Blues encore drove things home on a high note. All in all, quite an evening, way to go Bobby!

Tie Dye Sky

As we speak, the Empire State Building is being lit up in tye dye colors in honor of the Grateful Dead. Specifically, the celebration is for the opening of an exhibit at the New York Historical Society honoring the band and  cataloging the career and accomplishments as of one of America’s most socially influential bands. On Wednesday night, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh will attend a charity fundraiser to celebrate the opening of the exhibit.

On a side note, rumor has it that Phil will be sitting in with Bobby tonight for the first of his 5 Ratdog shows in the city this week. Today is truly a proud day to be a New York Deadhead!

Old School

We’ve certainly looked back at where the Dead got their start here on Welcome To Now, But we’ve never really examined Phish’s musical origins. With Halloween approaching and now less than 2 weeks away, this is as good of a time as any to check out this crispy peice of Phishtory from Oct. 30th, 1985. The show includes the first ever live performance of Harry Hood, and a few other songs that have remained an integral part the cannon of Phish 2.0 and 3.0: Slave to the Traffic Light, Possum, and Sneaking Sally through the Alley. Enjoy!

Ratdog Tour Kick-Off

Bob Weir and his scrappy Ratdog clan kicked of a short Northeast tour last night at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA. The tour consists of  a Friday/Saturday 2 night stand at the Tower, Monday and Tuesday at the Grand Ballroom in NYC, and a 3-night run next weekend at the newly renovated Beacon Theater in NYC.

Happy B-Day Bobby!

Happy B-Day Bobby!

Last night was a special night for the band as it was Bobby’s 62nd birhtday. The song selection was classic Bobby – Help/Slip opener, 3 Dylan tunes, Ripple closer, and a nice Blackbrid, Masters of War, Masterpiece acoustic mini-set. Hopefully the band will really bring it this tour, look for a first hand review of next Saturday’s tour closer at the Beacon.

Furhtur NYE

It’s official. Dark Star Orchestra’s John K. will abandon his band and his fans to play two shows with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir as ‘Furthur‘ in SF for NYE. Phil Lesh once said the Grateful Dead lives forever – is it worth reaping havoc with the heirs to the throne for one last hurrah with old man Bobby behind the wheel? See what HiddenTrack has to say about it here… Starheads everywhere are outraged, especially those that bought tickets to see DSO NYE over the last month(!) prior to the annconcment that they were onsale.

NYC Weekend Music Round-Up

Fall is in the air and the NYC music scene is heating up again after a few weeks of relatively low activity following the summer concert season. The next couple months will see just about all the big names in Jam coming to NYC – Phish, Furthur, Ratdog, The Disco Biscuits, Gov’t Mule, Lotus, The New Deal – you name it, they’re coming before 2009 is up. That said, let’s take a look at some of the goings on this weekend in the city:

Trey Anastasio Band to Tour in Feb. 2010?

Check out the screenshot below taken from a concert booking site – according to which Trey will be going on the road solo early in 2010 with a few dates in the Midwest and Northeast. I’m sure the boys will be ready for a break after Fall and NYE 09′ and this will be a good chance for Trey and likely Mike to get some space and go solo for a bit.
