Gov’t Mule – 5/30/09 – Mountain Jam Night 2

Gov’t Mule kept things going last night with their second headlining performance up at Hunter Mountain. Another amazing looking show with some great covers and interwoven jam segments. Tonight, while the Allman Brothers Band closes things out at Hunter, Phish will be kicking thing off a few miles north up at Fenway Park for their summer tour. Summer is here and what a summer it will be musically!

Grateful Dead – Portland, ME – 4/01/85

Check this straight fire Dead show from spring of 85′. This AUD recording really captures the energy of the show and preserves it in its true form. Highlights include one of the best Rooster’s I’ve ever heard, a surprisingly tasty Bird Song, a beautiful Looks Like Rain, and a smokin’ Other One. Jerry’s guitar playing is in the zone – totally honed in, and Bobby’s rhythm playing in this show is some of the best I’ve heard from the man.

Phish Is Back

Phish is back. And they’re everywhere.

phish

This week the band released their first single from their forthcoming album – Time Turns Elastic. This 13 minute introspective pop-jamrock-ballad definitely has some fun sections, a rocking refrain and some catchy melodies. While it’s no ‘David Bowie’, it’s no ‘Mexican Cousin’ either and I’m glad to see the band at least moving in a positive direction with their studio work. Check it out at the following links:

The boys set out on the road for their summer tour – their first tour in 5 years – this Sunday at Fenway Park in Boston. This is a historic show for the band, and their first real stadium gig ever. Fenway kicks off the following monster 2-leg summer tour:

Elvis – 8/01/69 – Las Vegas, CA

Let’s mix things up a bit here on Welcome To Now and return to the summer of 69′ to dig on this Elvis show from the one and only Sin City. In addition to a lot of his greatest hits, Elivs takes on some nicely chosen covers too – Hey Jude, What’d I Say, Baby What Do You Want Me To Do, and a few others. Give it a listen…

Trey with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra – 5/21/09

Last night, Trey joined forces with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for the East Coast debut of Time Turns Elastic – his most recent orchestral composition. Big Red also offered up some phish classics such as First Tube, Pebbles and Marbles, and an If I Could encore. He let the Orchestra have their way with Divided Sky and Guyute – two pieces that lend themselves quite nicely to the orchestral setting. Overall, reviews coming in thus far are quite positive and the Phish community’s excitement level for the upcoming tour just went from 10 to 11.

The Grateful Dead – 9/2/68 – Sultan, WA

In celebration of Memorial Day weekend, dig on this old school show from Labor Day weekend, almost half a century ago (!) in 1968 – our first post from guest blogger drums-space Brad.

Today we bring you a tasty nugget from The Greatful Dead. Headin’ back in time for some primal dead. This is a great show, good quality, and the Dark Star is just amazing. Sit back and relax to the juicy raspberry psychedelic explosion that is 1968 primal Dead.

This Day in Grateful Dead History

It’s been a while since we dusted off our ‘this day in GD history’ textbooks, so let’s get to it! This day in GD history finds the Dead in Portland, Oregon in 1974. Play close attention to Keith’s keyboard work – still new to the band, he’s playing crisp, clear, and like he’s got something to prove. Donna’s also letting it all hang out, even if she’s definitely not as polished as in 76/77. Bobby’s growling, Phil’s bombing, and Jerry’s in the zone, what more could you want? Stream the sound board recording here.

Dear Mr. Fantasy, Play Us A Tune

If you haven’t noticed, we’re big on the whole guitar gods thing over here on Welcome To Now. Let’s indulge some more with two killer bootlegs – one from Stevie Winwood and Traffic and the other from Eric Clapton and Derek and the Dominoes. Both of these shows take place at the historic Filmore East in New York City in the 1970s. This is the stuff legends are made of.

Clapton and Winwood

Clapton and Winwood

This Traffic show has crisp, pristine sound and just flows with creative energy. The band’s jazzy grooves cut with Winwood’s incendiary guitar lead create breathtaking psychedelic jams –  without any overindulgent noodling. Winwood keeps things grounded but this show definitely takes off. Mr. Fantasy and Medicated Goo are highlights but the whole thing just flat out rocks and the band dosen’t miss a beat.

While not as crisp sounding as the Traffic show, this early Clapton/Derek and the Dominoes bootleg really captures the un-cut and raw energy and talent of Clapton. Check out Clapton’s great use of the wah wah effect in this show and the diversity in sound between his tone-filled fender riffing and laid back wah wah wailing. You can clearly hear Hendrix’s influence in his sound at this point and see Clapton explore some more experimental jams than his later year. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.
