Watered-Down Phish in VA

Last night, Phish performed for the first time at the intimate Harbor Center NTELOS Pavillion in Porstmouth, VA (just 30 minutes away from the Mothership). While the show offered up a number of highlights and solid playing for the most part, the setlist left something to be desired the band’s playing was notably less exploratory and ‘loose’ as the opening 3 nights of tour. Four shows into the tour and yet to repeat a song, the stage is set for Hartford 2010 – look out for yet-unplayed gems PYITE, Birds of a Feather, Yamar, and oxy-years hits Scents and Subtle Sounds and ASIHTOS. It’s gonna be hot people!

Phish – Greatest Hits In Chicago

The boys really kicked Summer Tour 2010 off with a bang last night, offering up a greatest hits-filled show in Chicago. This has to be the most exciting tour opener of any Phish 2.0 or 3.0 trek, and arguably one of the tightest and best played. The show focused on older material with big jam vehicles DWD, Possum, Reba, Divided Sky, and David Bowie all appearing in the 1st set! The 2nd set also started with a full on blitz of two jam sandwiches of Light->Maze, and Ghost -> Limb by Limb.

Phish Totyota Park 2009

The second set then slowed down a bit with a sweet Prince Caspian followed by an always welcome Horse-> Silent. To cap things off, a fun and explorative Antelope closed out the set but not before the Band offered their first debut of the tour – Trey and The Dude of Life’s newly penned ‘Show of Life’ that was first played on the recent TAB Band Tour. A one-two punch encore of Cavern and Julius ended things on a rocking high note – hopefully a theme that will continue tonight at Blossom and throughout the tour!

Today in Grateful Dead History

32 year ago today, the Dead played one of their top shows of the fine year of 1978. April 15th, 1978 found the band playing a gig at William and Mary College in Virgina. While an unexpected venue for a monumental show, that is often how it goes on tour and certainly for the Dead who had a knack for blowing the big gigs while bringing the heat at the strangest of times.

Jerry in 78'

The show features the year’s only Morning Dew and what a ‘Dew it is! This is not to be missed, Jerry lays it all on the line with in a truly heart-wrenching show of emotion and beauty. The perfect complement to the rocking Not Fade Away that preceded it, this Dew is just about perfect. This Not Fade Away -> Morning Dew sequence is the exclamation point on this smoking show, a true gem of 78.

Faux Jerry Gets Real

Dark Star Orchestra’s, oh wait… I mean, Furthur’s John Kadlecik aka ‘Faux Jerry’ debuted his new project, ‘The John. K Band’, last week with an intimate gig at the Bossa lounge in Washington, DC. The show had no shortage of inspired moments and included a nice mix of Dead, other covers, and JK original material.

John K.

As a whole, the band sounded tight and practiced and the show only had a few rough moments and missed cues. Filling out the sound of the group is some fun drum-driven parts and jams (John’s wife plays percussion with the band). This was a one-off gig but I’m sure John will have this band back playing soon enough, so catch em’ while you can and enjoy a setlist/stream from last week’s show below!
