Trey brought his Classic TAB band to Chicago last night for a long and jam-packed show at The Riviera Theater. The first set concluded with a 4 show Trey solo acoustic segment as he has been doing over the past week of the tour. This time, Trey dusted off Phish staples Brian and Robert, Driver, Sample In A Jar, and Wilson for the acoustic treatment. The second set was straightforward heavy-duty Trey Band ragin’ fun with jam-favorites Dragonfly, Night Speaks, Sand, Mr. Completely, and Last Tube making appearances along with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Black Dog’ to end the set. Setlist, downloads, and pics below, enjoy!

Trey and Classic TAB lit up the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, while Furthur channeled the ghosts of 5/8/77 in a special Barton Hall performance, and at the same time way out in Colorado – Gov’t Mule raged on a mountain in Aspen. The Hampton Coliseum, The Mothership – a classic arena in Dead lore and Phish lore alike. The venue is famous for its spaceship-like appearance, intimate size, impeccable sight lines, and of course the legendary shows that have graced its stage.
Hampton Coliseum
Last night was surely a real treat for Furthur, playing their largest venue of the tour, albeit not sold out by any means. The band went for an 80s pychedelia feel for the show, dusting off gems like Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again, Picasso Moon, and Dear Mr. Fantasy, accompanied by a nice mix of 60s tripper material including Viola Lee Blues, Dark Star, and Masons Children.

With all the great music making going on these days, it’s easy to forget about the history of great music over the past half century. Countless musician’s creativity, hard work, and inspiration have laid the foundation for today’s musical explorers – providing the musical framework and vocabulary for new jams and grooves. In the spirit of looking back at some of those musical pioneers, let’s groove on a classic Dead show from the summer of 1974.
The Dead in the Summer of 74'
This show is one of the band’s final before their few-year hiatus that began later in the year. The show features the Dead playing their famous ‘Wall of Sound’ speaker rig and the sound is just perfect – a clear and rich mix of everyone. Check out a solid audience recording stream/download below! The band busts out ‘Let It Rock’ for the only time ever, and Phil and Ned Lagin debut their electronic music composition ‘Seastones’ between sets. This show is a gem and a must-have for any true Deadhead’s collection.

The first Phish-related action of the year kicks of tomorrow as Trey Anastasio takes his so-called ‘Classic TAB’ band out on tour for a month of shows across the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Midwest, and Southeast. As you may remember, Trey re-united the original 4-piece Trey Anastasio Band (Trey, Russ Lawton (Drums), Tony Markellis (Bass), and Ray Paczkowski (Keys)) in the Fall 0f 2008 for an 8-show run. This time around, Trey will add to the 4-man core with a tight 3-piece horn section featuring Russell Remington (Tenor Sax/Flute), Jennifer Hartswick (Trumpet) and newcomer Natalie Cressman (Trombone), who replaces her father, Jeff Cressman.
TAB - 10/18/08
This highly anticipated tour is sure to feature material from throughout Trey’s solo career, Trey Band/Phish classics like ‘Sand’,’First Tube’, ‘Gotta Jibboo’, and ‘Backwards Down The Number Line’, as well as a wide selection of choice covers. Check out this Hidden Track article that takes a look at some classic Trey tunes that may be brought out on this tour.
