For Valentine’s day this year, let’s all enjoy a menage a trois of jammy goodness. Trey and Classic TAB lit up the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, while Furthur channeled the ghosts of 5/8/77 in a special Barton Hall performance, and at the same time way out in Colorado – Gov’t Mule raged on a mountain in Aspen. The first Phish-related action of the year kicks of tomorrow as Trey Anastasio takes his so-called ‘Classic TAB’ band out on tour for a month of shows across the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Midwest, and Southeast. As you may remember, Trey re-united the original 4-piece Trey Anastasio Band (Trey, Russ Lawton (Drums), Tony Markellis (Bass), and Ray Paczkowski (Keys)) in the Fall 0f 2008 for an 8-show run. This time around, Trey will add to the 4-man core with a tight 3-piece horn section featuring Russell Remington (Tenor Sax/Flute), Jennifer Hartswick (Trumpet) and newcomer Natalie Cressman (Trombone), who replaces her father, Jeff Cressman.

This highly anticipated tour is sure to feature material from throughout Trey’s solo career, Trey Band/Phish classics like ‘Sand’,’First Tube’, ‘Gotta Jibboo’, and ‘Backwards Down The Number Line’, as well as a wide selection of choice covers. The Disco Biscuits make their triumphant return to the stage after their massively successful and well-praised New Year’s 2009 5-night-run at the Nokia. This year’s Jam Cruise 8 featured an impressive, fun, and diverse lineup as well as tons of one-off-projects, collaborations, late-night jam sessions, and a crazy party like no other on the open seas. Check out this deep, funky goodnes in both visual and auditory formats from one of these collaborations – ‘Fantastic 4’ featuring jazz/jam/funk greats Eric Krasno (Soulive), Robert Walter (Greyboy Allstars), George Porter Jr. (The Meters), and up-and-comer Adam Deitch (Break Science). This quarter brings together funk, jazz, and rock in an infectious and uplifting groove – this is good shit that is not to be missed.

Furthur Stealth Show in Fairfax, CA

Days after announcing a big 2010 tour, Furthur played a stealth, last minute show on Friday night, Nov. 20th in Fairfax, CA. The band is currently rehearsing for their upcoming December Tour and NYE shows. John K. was of course with them and in top form as always, while Jeff Matson filled in the last few shows with Dark Star Orchestra on their Fall tour. Faux Jerry will re-join his DSO brothers Tuesday night in Syracuse and stick with them through their T-Giving weekend shows in NYC, a couple shows at the Higher Ground in VT, and on through their tour closer on Dec. 5th in Bufallo, NY. In the mean time, things in Furthur camp are looking up – Bobby seems to be really back in a groove these days, John K. is finding his own space with the band, and Chimenti’s playing is starting to shine through, check out the nice extended Lady With A Fan (Terrapin) Jam YouTube vid below:

Check out these two smoking hot off the presses Phish DVDs – one from each leg of their monster Summer 2009 tour.

The first dvd comes from the Leg 1 standout show in Camden, while the second comes from Darien Lake – the first show of the summer ending 4 night run. While Camden is hailed by many fan’s as the top show from the first leg, this Darien show is also a real gem that gets overlooked by many as it happens to be overshadowed by the bustout-crazy Hartford show that followed it. In any case, both of these shows are top notch Phish 3.0 and these vids are surprisingly well done.

Ahhh, Friday afternoon – a time to relax, turn off, and let your mind surf the interwebs for endless entertainment or lack thereof. If you’re too lazy to see what’s out there, let me help you. Here’s a few noteworthy stories and goings on from the world of Jam today:

1. Warren Haynes: “I am a Jamband whore; and I couldn’t be happier.”

Well, he didn’t exactly use those words, but Warren said about as much in a Billboard article out today. The man is having his busiest year to date with big tours going on with The Dead (Spring Tour 2009), The Allman Brothers (Beacon Run and Summer/Fall tour w/ WSP), and his own Gov’t Mule project (touring on and off throughout the year). Warren also talks about the new Gov’t Mule album out soon and the solo disc he recorded this year with George Porter, Jr., Ivan Neville, Ian McLagan, Ron Holloway. Always a rumor monger, let me also point out that Warren says that “he’s confident the Dead is going to do some more”, especially with the group’s 45th anniversary in 2010. You may be a whore Warren, but we love you.

2. Animal Collective sample the Dead’s ‘Unbroken Chain’ in new track

News broke today via a Tweet that self-proclaimed Deadheads Animal Collective have been granted the rights to legally sample the Grateful Dead’s classic PhilZone Epic ‘Unbroken Chain’ in a new track the band is working on. You can listen to an unreleased version of the song here (Phil vocal loop comes in near the end).

3. Mike Gordon announces September tour; gets bad haircut

Mike announced today via a creepy video that he’ll be taking to the road in September with his solo band featuring shred-tastic Scott Murawski on guitar, Brooklyn drummer Todd Isler, keyboardist Tom Cleary, and percussionist Craig Myers. Let’s just hope he leaves that Joker costume from the video (see right) at home – that thing is down right scary.

4. Phish continue Halloween festival map mystery

Phish blacked-out more states on their Halloween festival map today (see right). Only 13 states now remain including Texas, Florida, and Nevada. That said, all the real phans know that the festival is still doing down in Indio, CA. Expect the announcment to drop before the band’s upcoming Red Rocks dates and Summer Tour Leg 2, likely this Monday coming up.
