Ronald “Pigpen” McKernan, founding member and original leader of The Grateful Dead, died 37 years ago to the day on March 8th, 1973. Pigpen died at the young age of 27, due to the debilitating effects of Biliary Cirrhosis. Pig was the original bandleader, main vocalist, and persona of the band – growling out blues, jug, and rock tunes like nobody else could.
