Summer Festivals Preview

While we’re deep in cold bitter winter, looking ahead to summer festival season brings a certain warmth and happiness. Lineups are already being announced, rumors are flying, and things are starting to heat up on the 2010 festival front. Here’s a look at how things are shaping up for some of the summer’s most anticipated festivals:

Wanee’s lineup pretty much speaks for itself this year – this looks to be a smoking festival with a diverse group of the best of the best in the jam scene. Tickets are on sale now at Wanee’s website.

The big question remains who will occupy the Sunday night headlining slot? The Allman Brothers Band headlined in 2009, Ratdog in 2008, and Phil Lesh and Friends in 2007. Rumors point to either Furthur, or Widespread Panic to have the honors this year. There should be a lot of other good artists added in the coming weeks as well so stay tuned.

Wakaruska 2007

STS9, The Disco Biscuits, Slightly Stoopid, John Butler Trio, Blues Traveler, Zappa Plays Zappa, Bassnectar, Railroad Earth, The Machine performs Pink Floyd, JJ Grey & MOFRO, Lotus, Rebelution, ALO, Tea Leaf Green, BoomBox, Black Joe Lewis, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, EOTO, James Zabiela, Split Lip Rayfield, Hayes Carll, Sub Swara, Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers, Reverend Peyton’s BigDamn Band, Trampled by Turtles, Wookiefoot, Mishka, Big Gigantic, Truth & Salvage Co., Fort Knox Five, Mountain Sprout, Band of Heathens, Last Waltz Ensemble, Cash’d Out, Earl Greyhound, Bluetech, Uglysuit, Passafire, Simplified, Hoots & Hellmouth, Resident Anti-Hero plus many more artists still to be announced.

But this fest isn’t just straight-Untz, other big  rock/funk/bluegrass names include the The Machine, Railroad Earth, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Zappa Plays Zappa, and Blues Traveler.

BONNAROO ~ MANCHESTER, TN ~ JUNE 10TH – 13TH

Bonnaroo 2009

The preliminary lineup announcement is due on February 2nd, heavily rumored acts include Furthur, Jay-Z, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson, Pearl Jam, Girl Talk, Steve Martin and many many many more of course. Keep an eye on Bonnaroo’s twitter feed for clues as to who will be appearing at this year’s festivities.

NATEVA FESTIVAL ~ OXFORD FAIRGROUNDS ~ OXFORD, ME ~ JULY 2ND-4TH

Oxford Fairgrounds

With Rothbury cancelled at least for this summer, rumor has it that AEG Live/Madison House are going to go big this year with their first Annual ‘Nateva Festival’ to be held in Oxford, ME over July 4th weekend. Nateva will make their initial lineup announcement this Friday, January 29th. Rumored big names include The Allman Brothers Band, Furthur, The Flaming Lips, and Trey Anastasio Band.

GATHERING OF THE VIBES ~ SEASIDE PARK ~ BRIDGEPORT, CT ~ JULY 29TH-AUGUST 1ST

Vibe Tribe - Seaside Park

No official announcment on lineup yet from the Vibe Tribe, but the festival has confirmed that they will return to Seaside Park, even after last year’s lower-than-hoped attendance, unfortunate deatch of a camper, and investigation into illegal activities by private security hired by the festival producers. All that aside, Vibes is back and is sure to be better than ever. An educated guess at this year’s lineup with we Dark Star Orchestra on Thursday night, Furthur on Saturday, and Deep Banana Blackout + other big names for Friday. If your’e a deadhead, there’s no place like the vibes, it truly is Deadhead Heaven.

With Festival 8 underway, and the mystery musical costume set soon to be revealed, the only remaining question is what the band has planned for New Year’s Eve. All signs still point to either 3 or 4 nights in Miami, likely to be announced a week or so following the festival. Other rumored dates include a few nights back at Hampton and 2 nights in Atlanta before continuing southbound.

While NYE is still up in the air – 2010’s plan seem more certain with a heavily rumored Trey solo tour in February followed by a Phish Europe tour in May.

Phish Halloween Album Update

With less than 3 weeks until Phish’s highly anticipated Festival 8, albums are being eliminated day by day from the Phish.com Halloween album mystery lineup. Most recently, frontrunner album Pet Sounds from the Beach Boys was eliminated. Notable and likely albums that still remain include The Band – Self Titled, Bruce Springsteen – Born To Run, David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust, Led Zeppelin – IV/ZOSO, and Jimi Hendrix – Are You Experienced.

Time Turns Acoustic

In a surprise move yesterday, Phish announced a special ‘crack of Noon’ acoustic set to take place at high noon on day 3 of Festival 8. The band also released the official schedule for their Halloween weekend jamboree as part of the announcement. In other Festival 8 news, Trey  gave two radio interviews this week to discuss the upcoming festival and the Phish reunion at large. For the most part, these interviews seems to be marketing tactics for the Festival which has been rumored to be struggling with below-desired ticket sales. As a result, these interviews are mostly fluff (not the good kind), though one interesting tidbit was revealed: the band had chosen a musical costume and learned half of it when Page vetoed the selection sending the band back to the drawing board. Some sources are reporting the shelved selection was none other than the Grateful Dead’s ‘Workingman’s Dead’…

Picture 1

Speaking of the Dead, let’s not forget the critical role the band played in defining many of the now ingrained traditions of the jam world – from LSD soaked audiences to following fanbases to tie-dyes to the rarely played ‘acoustic set’. Let’s look back in time 29 years ago to the day to one of those special evenings where the Dead treated their fans to a special acoustic set (followed of course by a raging electric set for set 2) on their home turf at the Warfield in San Fran. Stream the crispy SBD here or download an audience recording here.

Camp Bisco 09′

With summer coming to a close, let’s look back again at some of the great summer music festival action this year. Here, we have the Disco Biscuits 3-set show from the final day of Camp Bisco 8. Widely regarded as the best Bisco showing of the weekend, this show featured a 1st set billed as “Tractorbeam Vs. The Perfume”. The band alternates between their two alter egos throughout the set, showcasing their unique and various styles and really starting things off with a bang. The second two sets are straight dirty, thow-down, ragin’ dance party bisco, what Camp is all about.
