Gathering of the Vibes Festival Preview

This weekend, the annual deadhead-getaway Gathering of the Vibes is taking place in Bridgeport, CT. For those of you that haven’t been, you don’t know what you’re missing. Vibes combines a consistently top-notch lineup with one of the most beautiful (there’s a beach!) festival venues out there. GOTV started out as a Grateful Dead tribute & celebration in 1996 – originally titled ‘Deadhead Heaven – A Gathering of the Tribe’ (a throwback to the historic Human Be-In festival). While the festival has grown, changed, and moved over the years, it still maintains the Grateful Dead spirit throughout like no other festival out there.

vibes

This year’s lineup features a great mix of Dead-related acts, jamband-favorites, and timeless classic rock artists, including: Bob Weir & Ratdog, Dark Star Orchestra, George Clinton’s P-Funk, Crosby, Still & Nash, Levon Helm, Buddy Guy, Deep Banana Blackout, moe., Keller Williams and many, many more. This year also marks the return of the late night stage with performances from The Machine, Lettuce, and Perpetual Groove raging until 3:30 in the morning! Check out all the artists here, or take a look at the main stage schedule below:

Friday Music News Round-Up

Ahhh, Friday afternoon – a time to relax, turn off, and let your mind surf the interwebs for endless entertainment or lack thereof. If you’re too lazy to see what’s out there, let me help you. Here’s a few noteworthy stories and goings on from the world of Jam today:

1. Warren Haynes: “I am a Jamband whore; and I couldn’t be happier.”

Warren

Warren

Well, he didn’t exactly use those words, but Warren said about as much in a Billboard article out today. The man is having his busiest year to date with big tours going on with The Dead (Spring Tour 2009), The Allman Brothers (Beacon Run and Summer/Fall tour w/ WSP), and his own Gov’t Mule project (touring on and off throughout the year). Warren also talks about the new Gov’t Mule album out soon and the solo disc he recorded this year with George Porter, Jr., Ivan Neville, Ian McLagan, Ron Holloway. Always a rumor monger, let me also point out that Warren says that “he’s confident the Dead is going to do some more”, especially with the group’s 45th anniversary in 2010. You may be a whore Warren, but we love you.

2. Animal Collective sample the Dead’s ‘Unbroken Chain’ in new track

Phil

Phil

News broke today via a Tweet that self-proclaimed Deadheads Animal Collective have been granted the rights to legally sample the Grateful Dead’s classic PhilZone Epic ‘Unbroken Chain’ in a new track the band is working on. You can listen to an unreleased version of the song here (Phil vocal loop comes in near the end).

3. Mike Gordon announces September tour; gets bad haircut

mike

Mike

Mike announced today via a creepy video that he’ll be taking to the road in September with his solo band featuring shred-tastic Scott Murawski on guitar, Brooklyn drummer Todd Isler, keyboardist Tom Cleary, and percussionist Craig Myers. Let’s just hope he leaves that Joker costume from the video (see right) at home – that thing is down right scary.

4. Phish continue Halloween festival map mystery

The Map - 7/17/09

The Map - 7/17/09

Phish blacked-out more states on their Halloween festival map today (see right). Only 13 states now remain including Texas, Florida, and Nevada. That said, all the real phans know that the festival is still doing down in Indio, CA. Expect the announcment to drop before the band’s upcoming Red Rocks dates and Summer Tour Leg 2, likely this Monday coming up.

NYC Weekend Music Round Up

This weekend in NYC there’s a spattering of good music to be seen as we celebrate May day and the summer to come:

Friday 5/1/09: Future Rock @ Le Poission Rouge, The Machine @ Symphony Space (full rendition of Dark Side of theMoon featuring the 100-person Bergen Youth Symphony Orchestra)

Saturday 5/2/09: Badfish @ B.B. King Blues Club, Sphongle @ The Filmore at Irving Plaza

Elsewhere, in the city of brotherly love, The Dead will do 2 nights at The Spectrum. This is a historic event as it is likely the Dead’s last tour, last stop in Philly, and defenitely the last stop at the Spectrum which will be taken down in the coming months. Look for updates and a full review of the saturday show in the coming days.

There’s enough good music going in New York City this weekend that this calls for an extended preview:

Friday Night – 4/10/09

um-duel

UM Guitar Duel

Umphrey’s McGee @ Nokia Theater Times Square – If you’ve been living in a hole for the past 5 years and still find Umphrey’s prog-Metal-Jam style fresh and interesting, then you’re in for a treat. They are likely to throw down 2 longs sets with classic cuts and fresh material off the recently released Mantis. Over/under on guitar duels between Jake and Brendan  –  seven.

lotus-nye-035

Lotus

Lotus @ Bowery Ballroom – If I had to choose, this is the show to be at Friday night. Lotus delivers a jazzy yet poppy, electronica-laced sound that is fun and danceable. They avoid the at times over-untz’d Bisco sound and keep things 10x times more interesting than Sleep Tribe Sector 9, finding a happy medium somewhere in between. Go, dance, stalk.

Strange Design w/ the McLovins @ Sullivan Hall – This is the cheese-factor show of the night featuring two fun bands even if their existence probably stands to be questioned. For those of you not famililar w/ the McLovins – they are a group of 12 year olds, discovered on Phish Phantasy Tour, forced to change their name to ‘McLovins’ because PT heads couldn’t get over the uncanny similarities between the guitar player and ‘McLovin’ form SuperBad. Anyway, nuff’ said, just check out the YouTube vid above and you’ll see why they are opening for Strange Design.

Strange Design is a Phish cover band that, while technically strong, seems to be made for nerds who never saw a pre-hiatus show and have sat in front of their computers listening to botched versions of YEM since coventry. With Phish back, one questions why they don’t pack it in and go on Phish tour if they love the music so much.

umelt

U-Melt

U-Melt late night (post-UM show) @ B.B. King Blues Club – If you don’t enjoy a good melt from time to time, this show is likely not for you. U-Melt honed their sound in the parking lot of Phish shows and has come a long way to be headlining B.B King’s on a Friday night in New York City. They promise to keep the party going until early in the morning.

Saturday – 4/11/09

Umphrey's w/ Keller Williams

UM w/ Keller Williams

Umphrey’s McGee @ Nokia Theater Times Square – Show 2 of their 2 night run at Nokia. Have yourself a Dumph weekend holiday.

Lotus NYE 08'

Lotus NYE 08'

Lotus @ Bowery Ballroom – Show 2 of their 2 night run at the Bowery.

Orchard Lounge

Orchard Lounge

Orchard Lounge with the Indobox @ Sullivan hall late night (post-UM show) – Orchard Lounge is an innovative trip-hop electronica trio of DJs out of Chicago and Indobox is an up and coming east coast Jam Warrior favorite. This show promises to be the best late night party in the city. Be there or be, well, asleep earlier than 5.

As always, brought to you via Jambase.com – turn on, tune in, go see live music!

NYC Weekend Music Round-Up

This weekend is dance/electronica heaven in NYC, the only problem is deciding which show to go to Friday:

Friday: The New Deal @ Bowery Ballroom, The Pnuma Trio @ Mercury Lounge, MSTRKRFT @ Webster Hall

Saturday: Toubab Krewe @ Sullivan Hall

Summertime And The Living Is Easy

Some recent additions to what is shaping up to be one of the most jam-packed summer concert seasons ever:

The Gathering Of The Vibes festival, held July 23-26 in Bridgeport, CT, added Crosby, Stills, and Nash to the already stellar line-up as the closing act on Sunday. If you haven’t been, this festival is deadhead heaven and, in this blogger’s opinon, the highlight of the Northeast festival season.

Gathering of the Vibes 2008

The Allman Brothers Band and Widespread panic announced a co-headlining tour for August and October of 2009. Thic tour promises to deliver a slew of guest appearances and cross-pollination between the bands. I can only imagine adding Jimmy Herring to the ABB arsenal to form a Haynes-Trucks-Herring trifecta.

The Disco Biscuits announced the first round of artists that will appear at this summer’s Camp Bisco 8, held July 16-18 in Mariaville, NY, including Nas and Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley, STS9, Shpongle, Younger Brother, EOTO, OL, and many many more. The electronica-heavy festival continues to diversify its offering and keep things interesting.
