Phish Halloween 96′

With all the excitement brewing over the upcoming Halloween Phish festival, let’s take a look back to see why Halloween is such a special day in Phish lore. For the 1996 celebration, as has become tradition, Phish sandwiched a ‘muscial costume’ set (a full album covered front to back) in between 2 full-length original sets. That year, the band took on The Talking Heads classic album ‘Remain in Light’. This show is just a monster – the band brings out part of the Giant Country Horns for the 2nd and 3rd sets and, by the time the night ends, bust out YEM, DWD, Reba, Forbin’s/Mockingbird, Brother, 2001, Simple, and a fitting Frankenstein encore. Without further ado, enjoy!

Here are a few choice Talking Heads covers from the show:

Levon Helm’s Dead

Levon Helm is in fact not dead, the man is alive and kicking and fresh off the release of his new album ‘Electric Dirt’ featuring a soulful cover of the Grateful Dead’s classic ‘Tennessee Jed’. Levon’s band is led by himself on drums and vocals and Larry ‘The Master’ Campbell  on lead guitar and backup vocals – a fantastic duo if I ever saw one.

Check out this great, crispy sounding AUD recording of Mule’s recent appearance at the Puisto Blues Festival in Finland. This show rocks, lots of Mule anthems (Thorazine Shuffle, Mule, Banks of the Deep End, Blind Man In The Dark) along with a nice helping of Blues classics (32/30 Blues, Look On Yonder Wall, Come On Into My Kitchen, and Zepelin’s Since I’ve Been Loving You). Warren’s on point but, then again, when is the man not? He’s may be a jamband whore, but he’s a true work horse – the hardest working man in the scene. Gotta love Warren, gotta love the Mule. Speaking of Mule, don’t miss their new album, ‘By a Thread’, and upcoming cross country 2009 tour!

Rothbury Webcast

This weekend, IClips is doing a free webcast of the Rothbury festival, taking place in Rothbury, MI from July 2nd-5th, 2009. Check out the  webcast schedule and stream here. Rothbury’s lineup this year just dwarfs any other summer fest going down in 09′. Huge performances include a one night return of the String Cheese Incident from their recent breakup. The fest will also showcase the only summer appearance (and last performance for some time) from The Dead, and headlining slots from rock greats Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. Other notable acts include G. Love and Special Sauce, The Disco Biscuits, Gov’t Mule, Keller Williams, Les Claypool, STS9, The Toots and the Maytals, and Umphrey’s McGee.

Phish Halloween Festival Update

Over the past few days, Phish.com has begun blacking out states on the map to narrow down the possible location of their Halloween festival. As you can see below, 9 states have been blacked-out so far – I’m not going to attempt to name the states as Geographay never was my forte, but you can see that California remains. I’m holding steady with my claim that the festival will take place at the Coachella festival site of Empire Fields in Indio, CA.

Phish Is Back

Phish is back. And they’re everywhere.

This week the band released their first single from their forthcoming album – Time Turns Elastic. This 13 minute introspective pop-jamrock-ballad definitely has some fun sections, a rocking refrain and some catchy melodies. While it’s no ‘David Bowie’, it’s no ‘Mexican Cousin’ either and I’m glad to see the band at least moving in a positive direction with their studio work. Check it out at the following links:

The excitment in the Phish community right now is potentially higher than any other time in the band’s history – let’s hope the band can run with it and blast off this summer. I’ll be there with an open ear, and open mind, and my dancin’ shoes laced high, ready to boogie down. Phish is back!

Trey with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra – 5/21/09

Last night, Trey joined forces with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for the East Coast debut of Time Turns Elastic – his most recent orchestral composition. Big Red also offered up some phish classics such as First Tube, Pebbles and Marbles, and an If I Could encore. He let the Orchestra have their way with Divided Sky and Guyute – two pieces that lend themselves quite nicely to the orchestral setting. Overall, reviews coming in thus far are quite positive and the Phish community’s excitement level for the upcoming tour just went from 10 to 11.
