Good Vibes

Let’s take a look back at some other noteworthy performances from this year’s Gathering Of The Vibes festival (check out coverage of the Levon Helm and Ratdog shows here). Thanks to the hard work of some tapers – special events like the Vibes live on long after the bands packed up and gone. Check out the following bootlegs from Deep Banana Blackout and Keller Williams.

Deep Banana raged the main stage friday night between P-Funk and moe.’s set (which was cut short due to intense lightning). I have to hand it to DBB – they were definitely the highlight of the evening. Vibes is a hometown show for DBB and they never dissapoint, this show is no exception. Highlights include a Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders tribute performance of ‘Like a Road’ and a smoking rendition of Santana’s ‘Soul Sacrifice’, enjoy!

Keller is a festival staple – you won’t find too many lineups out there without the one-man freak show these days. Over the years, Keller has worked up quite a staple of fan favorites and always brings his A-game, especially in prime-time early evening slots like at this year’s Vibes. Highlights from the show included a funky take on Phish’s ‘Birds of a Feather’, a nod to the Dead with a fun ‘Eyes of the World’ w/ Donna on vocals, and runs through some of his greatest hits like ‘Kidney In A Cooler’, ‘Freeker By The Speaker’, ‘Breathe’, and ‘Best Feeling’. All in all, a very solid showing and a fun, upbeat show, give it a whirl!

Phish at The Gorge – Night 1

Phish kicked off their highly anticipated weekend run at the beautiful and serene Gorge Amphitheater last night. Expectations were high, the weather was beautiful, and the band really delivered quite a showing, setlist and playing-quality wise. Should be quite a weekend ahead, the Phish train just seems to keep picking up speed, show by show. Keep it comin’!

Today in Grateful Dead History

Later released as Dick’s Pick 32, this gem of a show comes from Alpine Valley in 1982. Although the show was officialy released, the Audience recording bootleg is still heavily circulated. It was pretty cool to see the band transition from Music Never Stopped>Sugaree>Music. ‘Big River’ is always a treat and it made me boogie in my chair. ‘CC Rider’ was hot with funky and folksy Bobby vocal stylings and playing. I really appreciate ‘Let it Grow’ as a set 1 closer as it leaves the crowd energized and hungry for more.

GDDP32

China/Rider picked up right where ‘Let it Grow’ left off to start off set 2; ‘Woman R Smarter’ brought the house down and was paired up nicely with a ‘Ship of Fools’ that cooled the crew down. The band then launches into outer space with a Playin’>Drums>Space>Wheel>Playin’ (Reprise) sequence – the journey was interesting, to say the least. Finally, Jerry brings things back down to earth with a tasteful yet moving ‘Morning Dew’. Going out on a high note, ‘Saturday Night’ raged to close out set 2 and ‘U.S. Blues’ topped everything off nicely.

Phish at Shoreline, 8/05/09

Phish layed down another eclectic set last night featuring some tasty covers including the first 3.0 bust-out of ‘Oh Sweet Nuthin’ (Velvet Underground) and one of the only 3.0 ‘Cities’ (Talking Heads) and ‘Bold as Love’ (Hendrix) renditions taboot. The first set alternated between short rocking numbers like ‘Golgi’, ‘Chalkdust’, ‘Ya mar’ and ‘Suzy’ with longer and more complex tunes like ‘Divided Sky’, ‘Time Turns Elastic’, and ‘David Bowie’. Keeping true to form, the 2nd set really took off further into the jamosphere with explorations into ‘DWD’, ‘Maze’, and a dark Mike’s>Simple>Groove to close out the set. All in all, quite an evening in Cali, next stop: 2 nights at the beautiful Gorge amphitheater.

Gov’t Mule Jerry B-Day Show

Warren and co. busted out some special tricks in celebration of Jerry’s birthday last week over at Ives Concert Park in Danbury, CT. Warren gave a nod to the big man by opening the second set with a solo rendition of the quintessential Garcia ballad ‘Stella Blue’. He then welcomed the band back out for a run through the tune he penned about Jerry’s death and legacy – ‘Patchwork Quilt’. Keepin’ the Jerry love flowing, he ran through a rollicking ‘Sugaree’ and topped it all off with a ‘Morning Dew’ encore.

Phish Saturday Throw Down at The Rocks

The phish roller-coaster continues as Trey and the boys continue their adventurous setlists and jam explorations. Saturday night’s Red Rocks show saw the first performance of ‘Mound’ since the 12/31/02 reunion show and man did they nail it. They also dropped the first ‘The Curtain (With)’ since it’s disastrous Coventry-closing performance where the band started the song in the wrong key and had to begin again. This version, on the other hand, is dead on. You can tell they are practiced and hungry to nail these songs – playing like they have something to prove.

As if that isn’t enough, the band also played the first ‘Esther’ since 9/30/00. They sandwiched a monster second set with a tasy Rock and Roll>DWD>Free opening sequence and a Harry Hood closer. All in all, quite an evening, who can even imagine what’s in store for night 4? If you haven’t already been doing so, check out live streams of the shows, as they happen, here!

Phish @ Red Rocks Night 2

Phish took to the rocks again last night for their 2nd of 4 nights at the historic ampitheater. They delivered a fun and eclectic show with a big 1-2 punch of The Who’s ‘Drowned’ and fan-favorite cover of the The Talking Heads ‘Crosseyed and Painless’ to open up the second set. The highlight of the show has to be the 2nd set jam sequence of Tweezer > BDTNL > Fluffhead > Piper> A Day In The Life. That right there, is the stuff that dreams are made of. Keep it coming’ boys!
